How to Blame the Victim
Introduction
Violence is always a result of individuals' choices. However, it is the people who get harmed by violent crimes that receive negative feedback from society. Why is it that victims of violent acts are blamed for what happened to them without their fault? Victim blaming is a situation where victims of cruel actions are held responsible for whatever happened to them ("Victim Blaming", 2009). Cases of blaming the victim have recently been occasioned in sexual assaults, racism, poverty, illiteracy, or poor academic performance, among other aspects in the society.
The miseducated child in the slums is one of the victims of misplaced blame, being blamed for his miseducation. The child is perceived to have every reason for his inability to read and write within himself. The child is said to be disadvantaged and "culturally deprived" due to poor upbringing as he doesn't know of basic things. Also, parents in the slums do not talk to their children, and that accounts for his failure in academics. Yet, no one questions the inequalities and low standards at the school, but everyone confines their attention on the child and bide on the child's alleged inabilities. (Ryan, 1971)
"Fundamental weakness of the Negro community" is another phrase that expresses a situation of blaming the victim. The phrase "Negro family" is fixed to undercurrent ideas of matriarchy, fatherlessness, and pervasive illegalities. In America, growing up in the Negro family will incline one to most of the racial ills. It elicits circumstances of the upbringing of a child by powerful women, and long-absent or never-present father figure, which end up damaging male children (Ryan, 1971). The poor, baffled male child cannot learn to become upright and forthright American boy; this is the reason Negros cannot achieve racial equality.
