Step One:
The year 2020 was especially interesting from a Sociological perspective. Thanks to photography, mass media and the Internet, with one click we can access images and information about real time events (as well as those documented in databases like https://www(dot)gettyimages(dot)com/editorial-images ).Links to an external site. This assignment involves looking through a custom-made slideshow created from Getty Images' website. The search parameters involved editorial images about "social protest in U.S" from January 1, 2020 through January 1, 2021. There were over 1,500 editorial images of various types of social protest/activism/civil disobedience on a wide range of social issues throughout the country. The slideshow is a representative collection of photos with their annotations to illustrate the year without prioritizing any particular issue. The images/descriptions are in chronological order to depict aspects of social movements and social change that we focus on in this module.
Look through the "2020 Social Protest Slideshow Page" below in its entirety. Pay particular attention to the dates, locations and descriptions of each event. Focus on the people, their behaviors/interactions, and any signs/images/components involved
Step Two:
Write your responses to the following questions after you have looked through the entire social protest slideshow:

7. What do you think is a more effective social movement tactic: disruptive civil disobedience or peaceful protest (and why)?
8. Did you participate in any social protest/activism/civil disobedience during the year 2020? If you did, describe one experience you had and what motivated you to participate. If you did not participate in any kind of protest/activism/civil disobedience this year, why not?
9. Name at least three of the key issues depicted throughout the slideshow. Which of these is the biggest social issue facing our society still today? What is your prediction for how people will (or will not) engage in social protest/activism about this key issue over the next few years?
10. Finally, why is it important for Sociologists to study social protest/activism/civil disobedience? What might we learn from their efforts about what happens between people?

Photography, be it motion or still, has a way of influencing thought and opinion. Historically, there have been various instances whereby photography has been used to capture moments that can, later on, help effect social change on a large scale. Photography also captures history in the making, acting as a reference point for all the subsequent generations to emulate or learn from. In the U.S., social change has been the clarion call for quite some time, and this is quite evident from how various incidents about the same have plagued society.
1. What is your overall impression of the slideshow? What are the first three words that come to mind in describing it? If you could write one sentence about the slideshow in its entirety, what would you write?
The effectiveness of a slideshow lies in the message delivery and achievement of the objective to deliver it and how it is done. In this case, a slideshow should have the visual aesthetics necessary to make it quite attractive and impressive to the viewer. I believe the slideshow was quite good, capturing all these facets and qualities needed for a good presentation. It was visually pleasing since it had all the required elements to make it so. It also achieved the emotional aspect, as I could feel the anger looking at some of the photos. The three words that come first are; elegant, attractive, and practical. One sentence would be; a precisely done presentation that captures all the emotions in one preview.
2. In terms of framing, what image stood out to you most (and why)?
Framing has often been a feature in photography that is often underrated yet quite important. Framing is a technique in photography where attention and focus are brought to a specific part of an image by blocking out other parts of the photo. It is usually an essential tool in emphasizing a certain point without using words or descriptions about the same. In other terms, it helps in generating the most desired response to a given phenomenon. The image that stood out the most to me when it came to framing was image 1250263203, about the black man who had initially been detained by police joining the demonstrations on Long Island. The focus was clearly on him, with the background blurred to emphasize this point.
3. In terms of civil disobedience, what image stood out to you most (and why)?
The photos of social unrests are often based on a portion of society's immediate but usually peaceful demands about specific rights. Civil disobedience is the refusal by an individual or a group of people to comply or abide by the commands issued by existing authority or government in a peaceful and nonconfrontational manner. Civil disobedience has been a major resort for most civil rights groups worldwide. It has often had mixed results, with some successfully achieving their agenda and others not doing so. The image that stood out the most was 1243377304, about the protesters in Manhattan taking the knee and raising their fists in the middle of the highway. It was a peaceful act of defiance to the authorities that clearly showed that people had power.
