Research Paper Instructions:

Module – Quantitative/SPSS Assessment

Imagine you have just carried out a small-scale study using an online survey of UK residents.  One of the things that you were interested in researching is participants’ reported overall satisfaction with the police and whether this is related to the participant’s age or income.  Using a scale of 1 to 10, participants indicated how satisfied they are with the police (10 being completely satisfied, 1 being completely dissatisfied), and they also provided their age (in years) and their income.

Using descriptive statistics and a correlation analysis, you have produced the following output in SPSS for your three variables:

Using this SPSS output, summarise the results of this analysis with reference to the original research question (e.g. are income and age related to overall satisfaction with the police?).  Your summary should:

  • Include an overview of the descriptive statistics, including how many participants took part in the study, and the minimum, maximum, and mean scores for the three variables measured
  • Provide an explanation of the results of the correlation analysis.  Are these three variables related to one another?  Are these relationships statistically significant?  Are the correlations positive or negative, and what would your conclusions be about your research question?

Your summary should be concise, and should not exceed 700 words.

Statistical Analysis
In an effort to understand the various determinants of police satisfaction, a recent survey was carried out among forty (40) respondents. Table 1 below shows that satisfaction with the police was varied, with a minimum satisfaction at 2 and maximum satisfaction at 10. Average satisfaction with the police is at 6.35, which is hinging towards relative satisfaction. Independent variables were age and income. Sample population was aged between 18 to 65 years, with average age at forty (40) years. Meanwhile, monthly incomes of sample population ranged from £12,000 to £100,000, with average monthly income recorded at £37,075. Data shows that there are no missing values in the survey.

Overall satisfaction police were correlated with independent variables to discover its connection to age and income. The result of such test can be seen in table 2 below. Correlation coefficient between age and satisfaction is at .440 with p-value = .005. This means that there is a moderately positive correlation between age and satisfaction: the higher the age of the respondent, the higher the probability that he or she will be satisfied with the police. Because p>.01, thi...
