Introduction
The element of celebrity power has been conceptualized as an ever changing performative action rather than intrinsic personal characters or external labels, the development of a consumable persona, authenticity and access. Considering that we are living in the modern world that individuals have access to technological gadgets, there has been an access to different platforms that give different images of celebrities(Furedi, 2010). When the lives of the celebrities are depicted as those that are surrounded with short-term relationships, parties, the consumption of drugs and alcohol, the public thinks this lifestyle remains ideal. Some of the fans of these celebrities however perceive this as a lifestyle that is worth living and that is admired.
The society has been exposed to contacts with the celebrities in this new age especially with the advent of platforms such as celebrity gossip. However, there are several elements that need to be understood, especially in the manner in which the influences of celebrity impact or affect the population of America, particularly the youths. Celebrities as determined in different literatures have destructively affected the lives of some funs by putting them in situations where they adopt a culture of using drugs and engaging in activities that affect their lives, a factor that has left many parents in America baffled (Wilson, 2010). This has been spurred by the contents that these celebrities put on the internet, television and in movies. This therefore determines that the pop culture needs to change the manner in which they make decisions or in their practice of unpleasant morals because of the influence they have on their young fans who look up to them. This paper therefore seeks to determine the manner in which celebrity power and its use by individuals improves or detracts the quality of public discourse in the U.S.
Celebrity Power and its Exercise by Individuals in Improving or Detracting the Quality of Public Discourse in America
According to a poll that was conducted of Americans, it was determined that 77% of the population were highly influenced by celebrities with the young girls toping the results of the poll. The effects of these experiences were more evident in the appearances and attitudes of the population influenced by the power of celebrities(Robbins, 2000). One of the participants in the poll who was a first grade teacher detailed that her students would sing suggestive song lyrics, engage in the use of derogatory language and even flirt with one another during class sessions. It has also been determined that the celebrities have created an impossible standard of beauty, that has seen more young adults dissatisfied, angry and less confident of their looks.
According to the poll, it was also considered that close to 40% of the nine and ten year old have either contemplated or tried to lose weight before their thirteenth birthday, with 54% of the girls identified as unhappy with the way they look(Kelley, 2011). This therefore may not be blamed on the media but the celebrities who have chosen to lose...
