The goal of this assignment is to gain a better understanding of candidate positions in the areas of information and media policy and begin to assess the role of these issues in upcoming election. Background research on two democratic debate (Sep 12) candidates.
Do some background research on any of the current presidential candidates (this can include the incumbent). Choose two candidates to focus on (dem or rep) and answer the following questions. Each answer should be about 1- 2 paragraphs.
1. Does this candidate have a state position on a media or information policy (misinformation/fake news, cyber warfare, foreign (digital) interference in the election, vulnerability of e-voting machines, data security, privacy, surveillance, net neutrality, broadband/internet access, job displacement, AI, social media regulation, etc.). If so, what is his/her position?
2. If the candidate is a career politician, in what ways has s/he influenced current media and information policy? For example, did this person sponsor or co-sponsor bills that would regulate or de-regulate telecommunication companies? Or, how did they vote on key issues in the past? If the person is not a career politician, do some background research on the individual and report how their chosen profession or position might impact their perspective on policy approaches.
3. Do you believe that this person has the background, experience or expertise to tackle policy issues amid the rapid pace of technological change? If given the chance, what would you like to ask this candidate and why?
