Research Paper Instructions:

This module covers the Renewable Energy Issue/Problem Paper assignment as described in the syllabus. Using the information from your own research, find the most significant issue or problem in renewable energy in your opinion. It should be noted that papers should be written in APA format and should convey a professional message much like a technical report or textbook.

Renewable Energy Problem/Issue Paper 

In this project, each student will create a (maximum) three (3) page paper (using APA formatting and rubric) discussing an issue or problem that any renewable energy technology/source (discussed in Module 1, Renewable Energy Technology) faces in YOUR opinion.  The idea behind this project is that each one of you can discuss an issue or problem that you find most important to the discussion of renewable energy.  For example, you may find that the most pressing issue in wind energy is the lack of recyclability of wind turbine blades or that the materials used to manufacture solar panels is toxic, it can be anything that you see as an issue or problem for any renewable energy discussed in Module 1, Renewable Energy Technology.  Your argument must be back with a minimum of 3 credible sources (journals, articles, credible websites, etc.).

Some things to watch out for when developing your paper:

How specific is your issue?  If your issue is too broad (i.e., wind turbines are an eye sore) not only will be difficult to find a solution, but the reader may not understand the argument you are making and thus the argument will lose credibility (grade may suffer).  Instead try to be more specific, so if wind turbines are an eye sore, what about the turbine is an eye sore?  Is it the blades, shadow flicker, or proximity to viewscapes?  That will make your argument much stronger and more credible.

Stuck and cannot find something to write about?  Just google something along the lines of “downsides of renewable energy,” but do not click on the very first thing because if everyone does that, there are more than 50 people in this class, and I do not really want to read 50 of the same issue.  Click on the next couple of pages and go through some of the information, now some of it is not going to be very good, relevant, or even up to date so make sure you are going through the information and make sure that you are backing up your argument with at least 3 (three) sources!

Not sure what I am looking for?  Follow the rubric, make sure you are going through that as you are putting your paper together.  I can read anything that is well written so if the paper reads well, your paper will be good.  Keep in mind that this is YOUR opinion, so I want to hear from you are on the right path (try reading your paper out loud to catch anything that sounds odd or strange).  So, think about when you are arguing about your favorite team, food, movie, etc. you know everything there is to know so do the same here, but in 3 pages or less!

If you have any questions, just ask!  These assignments are designed to be relatively low-stress and give you the opportunity to bring up an issue that you find significant in renewable energy.  Do not stress, 3 pages in APA format is nothing!  You will do great (just make sure you turn something in!!).

Renewable energy emerges as the panacea for the environmental and human health threats posed by energy resource availability and usage. However, energy generation is only as efficient as the convenience of production. The efforts at a large-scale creation of renewable energy forms have introduced the concept of farms and parks (Miskin et al., 2019). The idea denotes the delegation of large parcels of land to accommodate the power generation infrastructure. This trend of power generation is foreign to the non-renewable energy context because solar farms occupy expansive land that stakeholders could use for other activities.
The trend in solar energy production stipulates that the larger the solar farm, the greater the harnessed power. As a result, counties are competing to start establishing the largest power farm for players to support by championing the course of the transition to renewable energy power usage. India’s Bhadla solar park is globally the largest solar power production site, exhibiting an impressive capacity of 2.25GW (YSG, 2021). On the flip side, the solar park also sits on a land size of about 14000 acres. Notably, several countries have invested in solar farms, as demonstrated by most sites launched between 2017 and 2020 (YSG, 2021). The justification for establishing the solar farms on the expansive lands is that these areas are arid and sometimes desserts. This rationale holds if the conservative depiction of a dessert as an inhabitable piece of land that people cannot exploit for any meaningful, productive use arises. In this context, solar farms are a convenient way of utilizing lands that would have been otherwise being lying unproductive. However, the arguments flop when alternative uses of the dessert lands emerge. This aspect is not an impossible mission in the contemporary technologically advanced world.
