Improving Surgical Outcomes: Classification and Care of Wounds
Program Description
Surgical Set Infections (SSIs) possess a large number of etiologies and a wide range of associated co-morbidities. Therefore, a large number of health care professionals exist that have varied ranges of knowledge regarding the treatment and care of SSIs (Health Service Executive, 2009). A number are attributed to the rise in SSIs in hospital health care settings and the most prominent being poor nurse knowledge in wound classification (Devaney & Rowell, 2004). To improve surgical outcomes and reduce SSIs it is required that continuous education is provided for nurses to improve their knowledge in this area.
The hospital recently introduced four new initiatives aimed at reducing incidence of infections at the hospital. These initiatives were, however, launched at the same time which confused the nursing staff members. This workshop is for providing continuous as a clarification for the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for surgical wound classification. The focus will be on the types of wounds as provided by CDC, the care approaches for these wounds to avoid infections, outcomes of poor classification, costs involved, and benefits of proper care.
Program Rationale
Since the introduction of the four initiatives, there has been an increase in SSIs in the surgical and emergency departments of the hospital. This indicates the need for nurses in the surgical and emergency departments require a clarification of the initiatives that are aimed at improving surgical care and wound treatment outcomes. The classification of the extent of infection in the surgical site during surgery is essential for the prediction of risks of infection in surgical wounds and is based on the surgical wound’s bacterial load or contamination (Devaney & Rowell, 2004).
