Today, Florida is ranked at position 49, of all the states that have allocated one of the highest per capital funding for their services on mental health. On average there are seven deaths that take place on a weekly basis. This statistics are some of the indicating signs that the prescription drug abuse epidemic requires attention the soonest possible or there could be serious repercussions. While the other sectors of the state have been hit, the Hillsborough county prisons have been gaining on the number of persons that are abusing the prescription drugs. On average the prison system in the state of Florida, there are more than 20% cases of mental disorders while more than 75% of the total population has been found to suffer from the substance and drug abuse (Novus Medical Detox Center, 2014).
Using the prescription drugs without the proper authorisation or trafficking in the same is a serious felony; however those that are involved have continued to rise, placing the Hillsborough county prisons at the epicentre of the epidemic.
