Florida Prescription Drug Abuse Intervention

 

The purpose of this assignment is to explore the impact of prescription drug abuse in Florida in a scholarly paper. This paper will require the student to narrow the focus to a specific population or area of interest.  Impacted populations might include neonates, professionals across a variety of disciplines (doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists), or others discussed in the course. Impacted areas to be considered include prisons and schools.

 

Select and describe one intervention or treatment program aimed at reducing the impact of prescription drug abuse on a population/area in Florida. Use the reading assignments and Shimberg Library to support the debate points and prepare your paper in 800 words, using a minimum of 3 peer reviewed references.  Keep in mind that a paper in APA format prohibits the use of personal pronouns (I, you, we, us, me, etc).  Do not use quotations.  Make every effort to use descriptive words that accurately convey your meaning.

 

All papers in this course require formative feedback to enable “process writing”. We will also use “Turnitin”, which is a plagiarism tool. You will be able to submit your formative paper to Turnitin at the same time you submit your paper to the faculty. Turnitin will identify sentences that have been found on the web (including other student papers). Anything that is not properly cited must be revised before you submit for summative evaluation. It is expected that you will revise your paper to achieve < 10% match for the summative evaluation.

Introduction
Drug abuse not only refers to use of intoxicants such as alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and heroin. Even medicine that has been prescribed by a health practitioner can be abused. This is when it is not used in accordance with rules and prescriptions of the doctor. An under-dose or overdose or prescription drugs amounts to an abuse. Prescribed medicine that is used for another purpose other than the ailment for which it is prescribed also amounts to an abuse (Ries, 2009). School populations in Florida have been identified as the most prone when it comes to abuse of prescription drugs. This discussion looks at the impact of prescription drug abuse in schools in Florida.
General Overview
Generally, the entire population of schools in Florida has been adversely affected by drugs. Surveys carried out over time indicate that almost every school in the state of Florida has reported case of drug abuse. The rates have been alarming in the recent pasts prompting the authorities in Florida to look for ways to curb the menace (Ries, 2009).. Although drug abuse is widespread throughout Florida, Hillsborough country schools are the most affected. In terms of racial and cultural orientation, the African- Americans, Spanish and Latino students in Hillsborough county schools are the worse affected. Analysis of surveys conducted indicate that there are certain underlying factors that influence students from this particular region to abuse drugs more compared to others.
Effects in Hillsborough Schools
One of the main adverse effects of abuse of prescription drugs is addiction. Just like other intoxicants, all drugs when abused can lead to an addiction. One of the categories of most abused prescription drugs in the painkillers (Goldberg, 2012). These are drugs that are prescribed by medical practitioners to relieve pain as a result of an ailment. These drugs are in most cases abused through overdose or sharing. When a person is in great pain, they more often tend to overdose in an attempt to relieve themselves of the pain fast. Yet another common tendency is sharing of drugs. The assumption that the ailment suffered is just as the one a friend suffered previously one is likely to borrow the same drugs. This is an abuse as each patient should seek consultations from a medical practitioner who would then make a prescription for that particular patient. When a patient becomes addicted to a particular drug, it means that the body cannot function properly without the intake of the chemicals contained in the drug. The body, therefore, becomes dependent on the drug, thereby weakening the immune system of a patient. When this happens, the anti-disease agents in the body that are mandated to fight diseases become weak. This leaves an individual exposed and prone to attack by diseases.
