In healthcare study or research, there are two common methods used. These are the qualitative and the quantitative methods. The qualitative method has been in high use due to the need to give meaning to terms rather than concentrating on figures. There have been different studies done on edema using qualitative method. The study done on edema named ‘potentially lethal pharyngolaryngeal edema with dyspnea in adult patients with mumps: A series of 5 cases’ is of great importance to nursing practice. Like in any other qualitative study method, there is in-depth explanation of terms which give nurses an insight into the meaning.
In this study, there is impression of the meaning of edema. It is swelling of body parts, which is associated with excessive fluid being trapped in the body tissues. Edema is usually associated with patients that have another ailment. It therefore comes as a complication of the first ailment. In this study, the edema discussed is associated with mumps in adult patients. However, it is crucial to note that; the information realized cannot exclusively be associated only with mumps in adult patients. Rather, some of the details are general and can be applied in other cases in a relevant way.
In this study, there is an indication that, mumps can be detected in patients who had previously received vaccination against the same. In this study also, there is indication that this kind of edema shows positive response to treatment using steroid without tracheotomy. There are different methods of treatment for edema accompanying different diseases. It is crucial that the best method is selected so as to avoid complications and to arrive at the best results. In this study too, there is indication that; patients with edema should be subjected topharyngolaryngeal examination so as to ascertain the best method of treatment.
Implication in nursing practice
This qualitative study is very crucial in nursing practice because; it provides some insights into paramount issues. Some of the issues that the study reveals are not just applicable to the kind of edema studied, but they could be used in general understanding of edema and even general nursing practice. This study provides an understanding of edema and more so the edema associated with mumps. This is an indication that; in nursing, it is crucial that one understands the nature of the various diseases. This way, it becomes easy to manage and prevent them. This study provides an insight into the fact that; edema is associated with other diseases. Buyukavci, Civilibal, Elevli & Duru (2015) observe that; edema is usually associated with medication, pregnancy or other diseases. This knowledge is useful to nurses because they become aware of the susceptible patients.
