In the U.S., some populations experience greater disparities in terms of health compared to others. Such disparities originate not only from the fundamental differences in health status but also in determinants of health. The ever increasing inequality in the U.S. has contributed to a high level of health inequalities in the country. Usually, African Americans tend to have worse-than-average health outcomes compared to their counterpart whites.
Systemic racism has made it challenging for the majority of African Americans to access healthcare services. The socially structured perception of African Americans as an inferior race has limited the healthcare opportunities available to them (Baciu, Negussie, & Geller, 2017). Discrimination against blacks implies that they are unable to access various benefits, including healthcare compared to the whites. Because of racism, blacks cannot enjoy the same privileges as whites would. As a result, African Americans find it challenging to demand better healthcare services from the government. At the same time, government officials may not care to meet the needs of the black community since whites appear to be more important.
Lack of economic activities for African Americans has been a major contributor to health inequalities in Atlanta. Due to the inadequate opportunities for the black community in the state, poverty has increased among African Americans. Poverty is responsible for the deteriorating health outcomes in the community. While African Americans constitute just above half of the population in the city, about 80% if African American children live in poverty compared to only 6% for whites (Anderson, 2018). The issue of a majority of African Americans in Atlanta living in poverty has made it challenging for them to access quality health.
