Studying a course related to the medical field may pose difficulties especially when the theories are difficult to apply in an actual patient. Medically-related courses require hands-on experiences to promote better learning. The problem typically lies when the student is less perceptive than the others. This creates a gap where this particular student cannot fully indulge in the experiences offered in the clinical setting.
As a competent nurse, it is one’s duty to provide the students with ample knowledge and teach them skills that are necessary to survive in the clinical environment. Clinical training comprises a complex of factors that stimulate the mental, psychological, and psychomotor skills of the student which are essential in providing high-quality care for the patients (Fitzgerald et al., 2012).
A formative assessment is crucial to identify the learning challenges faced by the students. Moreover, it serves as a checklist in the proper monitoring of their performance and to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the learners. Hence, it is essential in guiding both the students and the educator in identifying the early signs of learning difficulties (Suskie, 2018).
Some of the strategies that can be used two support the struggling student include the following: 1) Use strategies that increase physical movement. This will be done daily to enhance the mobility of the students since the hospital environment requires health providers who work accurately and efficiently. The nurse educator can ask the student to do errands to enhance physical and emotional fitness. Furthermore, it imposes responsibility and trustworthiness. Another method is to train the students’ moving time by arranging objects individually, by pair, or by the group. This activity promotes agility and reaching a goal within a time limit.
