Middle-range theory
Middle-range theories are more specific and limited to few aspects based on real life experience. This theory is derived from grand nursing theories. The theory is derived from real clinical experiences. According to Smith (2013) the theory states "In stressful health care situations, unmet needs for comfort are met by nurses". Since 1970Ò€™s evidence practice has become a norm in the health care. Health care specialists have put a lot of effort to ensure research findings and recommendations are put to practice. For chronic illnesses, self-care maintenance highly depends on the recommendations given by providers and the effort of nurses in ensuring the recommendations are implemented to the latter, Peterson & Bredow (2009). It therefore means that providers will influence patient lifestyle on issues like smoking, how to cope with stress, quality of food to take etc. Roy (2014) argues that some of these practices have to be imposed on patients by the health care professionals or family. Adherence to these "rules" is essential to self-care maintenance.
Self-care can be defined as the entire process of health maintenance through promoting health practices and managing illnesses. Every person participates when it comes to health care daily though what he/she does like choosing food, brushing teeth and cleanliness etc. This means healthy persons can maintain their health. However, self-care is a serious challenge to patients with chronic illnesses therefore there is need to apply middle-range theory here. Self-monitoring involves routine body monitoring and surveillance, Meleis (2010). Monitoring is considered a common responsibility for every individual for instance checking regularly for weight gain or loss. For the case of chronic illness patients, monitoring should be very systematic and consistent to produce ...
