Nursing as a practice has changed the history of both Women and Canada as a country. Nurses have made a great impact on the quality of life in Canada. From the Augustine Nuns who came to Quebec in 1639 and established a medical mission, to the nineteenth century catholic orders such as the Grey Nuns and Anglican and Mennonite nuns, nursing continued its gradual growth. Early nursing tasks fell in the hands of female family members, before a formalized training and professional approach to nursing was introduced. Since the first formal nurse training program was introduced at the General and Marine Hospital, St. Catherine Ontario, nursing schools in many major hospitals across Canada came to be. With more education, nurses` responsibilities increased. During this time, women leaders in the nursing fraternity were more focused on the working conditions of nurses and the reputation of the practice. This paper examines the contributions of various nurses who continue to inspire nursing practitioners to date. The Nurses brief history is explored and their contributions to the practice examined.
Among the individuals who can be noted is Bertha Harmer, a graduate of Toronto General Hospital School of Nursing. She was an academic who taught nursing in schools in North America, including Vassar, Yale and McGill. She wrote a book titled The Textbook of the principles and practices of nursing which was published in 1923. The book was used for many years even after her death in 1923 (Anne Mcdonaugh, 2004). Mary Alice Blackwell Turner on the other hand fought to lay claim to a homestead under the soldier settlement act. She enlisted other women veterans to come and claim the free land after the world war. She led female veterans of the war who had served as nurses to press harder for a fairer share of peacetime resources. (Veronica Strong-Boag, 1991, p.245)
Since nursing was predominantly a female occupation, nurses had to endure difficult working conditions low respect of their career and low pay (McDonaugh, 2004). Some nurses stood out in the fight to make nursing a respectable and rewarding career.
