Orientation on the role of a nursing educator is one of the dynamic but challenging processes. Over the learning curriculum, I acquired relevant skills and expertise in teaching relevant skills to nurses. A practicum experience plays a significant role in enhancing the capability of a nursing educator to identify learning needs and limitations while providing an opportunity for involvement in a teaching-learning environment. According to Benner (2012), one of the humbling experiences is joining the academic arena as a nursing educator. Currently, curriculum experts are yet to develop core competencies that nursing educators need to operate successfully, thus, resulting in feelings of incompetency and inadequacy. The transition from a clinical expert to a nursing educator can be overwhelming and time-consuming.
Nursing students expect that educators ought to be competent in clinical settings and classrooms alike. However, they fail to recognize that the educators have to go a learning process just like them (Del Prato, 2017). I fulfilled a practicum experience at the university and included participation in the synthesis of knowledge and lectures. Health assessment is a course in nursing that entails both lab and lecture (Benner, 2012). The core objective of the nursing course is to bring together the acquired knowledge and give nurse educators a transition to the word of nursing. I have managed to develop teaching strategies and educator practices in the clinical setting, classroom, and skills lab to address the issues, such as anxiety and clinical evaluation throughout the study.
