Schizophrenia on Genders
Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder that affects both males and females. A study carried by California Clinical group indicated that postmenopausal schizophrenia is more prevalent and severe in women than in men. Moreover, men are prone to this disorder at young age rather than in the mild stages in life. Since female brain develops and matures at higher rate than that of the males, childhood insults are rare in females than in males. However, the symptomatology of schizophrenia is more determined by hormonal and behavioral variations and therefore triggering difference health consequences in male and females (Gross-Isseroff & Weizman, 2006).
Schizophrenia signs and symptoms
Schizophrenia has several signs and symptoms that are commonly prevalent for over a month, while other lasts for more than six months within the infected persons without a prior notice. This disorder does not indicate any pathogenic symptoms unlike most of other psychotic disorders (Smythies, 2004). Rather, schizophrenia has numerous psychological realms such as hallucination (false voices), delusion (false beliefs), flat effect, incoherence, catatonic behaviors and depressive symptoms. These symptoms normally emerge between the 14 and 27, earlier in males than in females. According to World Health Organization (WHO), schizophrenia patients die 12 years earlier than the general population.
Behavioral and psychological traits are linked with occupational and social impairments. Victims suffer deteriorations of many functional domains such as learning, working and social aspects over a long time before the heterogeneity invariability is noticed. Schizophrenia patients also suffer medical illnesses such as thrombosis, heart attack and stroke, hence increased mortality.
Schizophrenia conceptualizations classify its signs and symptoms in two categories- positive symptoms and negative symptoms. Delusions and hallucinations fall under positive symptoms. Disorganized symptoms consist of disorganized behaviors, distorted speech and irrational decisions. On the other hand, negative symptoms include flattening of critical emotion expressions, alogia and reduced mental capacity. These negative symptoms are closely related to psychotic symptoms such as environmental deprivation, stressful syndrome and dysphoria. Research indicates that around 12% of schizophrenia patients commit suicide, while 20-40% of the schizophrenia persons try to commit suicide at least ones in their lifetime.
Sometimes it is hard to differentiate schizoaffective disorder from schizophrenia disorders. According to Ritsner (2011) “moods in persons suffering from schizoaffective disorders deviate from the normal state for longer periods than in those with schizophrenia” (177-180). In contrast to schizoaffective disorders, persons suspicious of suffering schizophrenia should seek medical help as early as two weeks of prominent mood systems. Other medical conditions and substance abuse are major co-morbid disorders with schizophrenia. These include alcohol abuse, consumption of stimulants like cocaine, nicotine and cannabis. Whether the criteria of the schizophrenia ar...
