Introduction
The Purnell Model was formulated to create an understanding of the interaction that takes place within a cultural setup. The model shows various domain and how the interact with each other. Although the model depicts them as individual domains, they are interrelated and intertwined and each is affected by all others. In order to fully understand this model comprehensively, the Zulu tribe will be used. Each domain will be discussed as it relates to the Zulu tribe.
Overview/Heritage
Origins
The Zulu tribe originated from South Africa. According to their history, the Zulu people originally came from Congo and settled in South Africa (Konstan, 2010). They settled in the southern and eastern part of the country where they had built semi-permanent houses.
Residence and topography
The Zulu people initially resided in villages where they ruled themselves. However, when the white minority rule began, the areas where they occupied were taken by the white Boers. Despite their resistance, their small group saw them outnumbered by the whites. The Zulus engaged the whites in a number of wars most of which they lost (Konstan, 2010). However, with the help of their leader Shaka the Zulu, they would eventually regain what they beloved was their land.
Economy
The Zulu people engaged in a couple of economic activities which would earn them an income. One of the main activities for which they are known includes beadwork, making of sculptures and basketry. Their exemplary works would be sold through barter trade and in exchange they would get food (Nita, 2013). Similar to other egalitarian societies, the Zulu tribe also engaged in subsistence farming. This was done mainly by women while men engaged in hunting and gathering.
Politics
The Zulus had their own leader who is famously known as Shaka the Zulu. He is the person who led the tribe out of the oppression from the white domination. During his reign, Shaka managed to conquer many regions and bring them under his rule (Nita, 2013). The political system of these people was not as elaborate was compared to the mainstream South Africa. Leaders were self appointed and fought their way into leadership.
Education
Although the people of the Zulu tribe did not go through formal education, they learnt through apprenticeship. They were exemplary in their works of art and these skills were passed through from one generation to another. This helped maintain continuity of the skills many years after.
