The composer Johann Sebastian Bach (JS Bach) was born in Eisenach, Germany in the year 1685 and died in the year 1750. He is regarded as one of most celebrated composers in the Western musical history (The British Library, 2009). This paper provides a comprehensive explanation of how and why Johann Sebastian Bach was inspired to become a musician. The musical contribution that JS Bach made is also described. In addition, any interesting attributes to Sebastian Bach that are non-musical are explained.
JS Bach was essentially a Baroque composer and in his lifetime, he was little-known and was largely recognized for performing on the organ. Johann Sebastian Bach composed in numerous established musical forms, such as the cantata and fugue, and developed them into sublime and complex pieces. JS Bach composed more than 1,100 works in virtually almost all musical genres with the exception of opera (Blanning, 2011). Bach worked as a composer, teacher, and an organist.
JS Bach in his family was the youngest among 8 children. Johann Ambrosius Bach, who was his father, had been a town musician and he gave JS Bach his early music lesson. JS Bach’s mother died in 1694 and his father died in 1695. Following the death of his father when he was ten years, he moved in with Johann Christoph who was his older brother and the organist at St. Michael’s Church, Ohrdruf. JS Bach obtained inspiration primarily from his father Johann Ambrosius Bach and his brother Johann Christoph. The early career of JS Bach involved playing the organ and violin at a low-level position within the ruling court in Neukirche and in Weimar from the year 1703 (Hanford, 2012).
The style of JS Bach was baroque, which was typified by steady shifts of underlying harmony, simple motoric rhythms, and lots of notes.
