Old age is a period of life in which mental problems frequently accompany physical ones. Depression is the most common psychological problem among older persons (1,2). According to the Turkish National Burden of Illnesses study, depressive disorders marked by unipolarity rank first among the causes of years lost owing to disability in the group aged 60 years and over (3).
The prevalence of major depression can increase by 6% to 26%, minor depression by 11% to 50%, and depressive symptoms by 30% to 55% for those living in nursing homes (4-10). In Turkey, the prevalence of depression is 24% to 29% for those living at home, increasing to 41% to 48% for those living in nursing homes (5,8,9). The reason for the high prevalence of depression in those living in nursing homes may be the stigma associated with living in nursing homes within the community, and the importance of the family in the Turkish society.
It may be possible to prevent physical and social disabilities in older persons by detecting mental problems at an earlier stage; detecting disabilities at an early stage may even prevent depression. It may be possible at times to easily treat both problems with early diagnosis. Two of the tests developed to detect psychological disorders and their accompanying physical and social disabilities are the General Health Questionnaire GHQ-12 (11), and the Brief Disability Questionnaire (BDQ) (12,13). The Turkish validity and reliability of these tests have been confirmed (14,15). The objective was to compare the general health and disability condition of the elderly living in 2 nursing homes in Ankara (the capital of Turkey) and in their own houses in 3 villages of Golba§i, which is 20 kilometers from Ankara, using the GHQ-12 and BDQ screening tests.

GENERAL HEALTH AND DISABILITY STATUS: A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN NURSING HOME RESIDENTS AND ELDERLY LIVING AT THEIR OWN HOMES

e elderly living in nursing homes or in their own homes.
Materials and Method: The study was carried out in July, 2000 on 367 elderly, aged a60, living in two nursing homes in Ankara and at their own houses in three villages of Golba§i. A survey form including descriptive questions, the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), the Brief Disability Questionnaire (BDQ), and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GOS) was administered to participants.
Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the GHQ-12 and BDQ mean scores between those living in nursing homes and at home (p<0.05). Scores were higher for those living at nursing homes for both conditions. For those living in nursing homes, the risk, factors for increased BDQ scores were being female, suffering from a chronic disease and to having a depression disorder. The risk factor for GHQ-12 was having a depression disorder (p<0.05).

Introduction
According to Hill (2013), elderly people living in the nursing homes suffer less levels of depression than those living in their individual residences. This inference result from the observations derived from a series of studies conducted among the elderly people living in both the nursing homes and residences in the various parts of the world. It is, however, a fact that elderly people suffer a certain level of depression that is largely a characteristic of aging and one of the challenges of old age. The magnitude and levels of depression, however, differ significantly between the elderly people living in the nursing homes and those living in their residences mainly because of the environmental factors and economic survival, among other things. This paper seeks to establish the extent to which depression is experienced among the elderly people living in nursing homes in comparison to those living as residents on their own capacity. Most of the conclusions will be drawn from studies and tests conducted by experts among the elderly, individuals living under these two different conditions (Maral et al., 2012). The paper will prove that the elderly people living in the nursing homes, unlike those living as ordinary residents, have fewer difficulties in meeting their needs, can interact with other elderly people living in the same nursing homes and enjoy a sense of security.
Economic Survival
As a result of their age, the elderly people are not in a position to engage in productive activities and realize income as is the case with the youthful generations in the human societies. As a matter of fact, many employers prefer youthful candidates to take positions in the various employment opportunities (Maral et al., 2012). This makes it difficult for the elderly people to secure job opportunities and, therefore, generate income in their own capacity. Moreover, the elderly person may be too weak or unhealthy to engage in active employment even when such opportunities are available. As a result, aged persons tend to face significant challenges in financing their survival in this increasingly materialistic human society. The problem may be especially explosive when the elderly persons do not own any form of savings, retirement packages or pension schemes. Studies have proved that most of the elderly people are incapable of financing their survival and livelihood at their own capacity; at least in the US (Hill, 2013).
The elderly people living in the nursing home are, to some extent, exempted from the survival costs. This is because the nursing homes are somehow effective in their provision of the basic human needs of the elderly people. For instance, the elderly people living in the nursing homes exempted from costs emanating from house rents, food bills and clothing, among other things. Bearing in mind that the elderly are relatively adapted to simple lifestyles and are rarely vigorous in their pursuit of life, the nursing home plays a significant role in cultivating contentment among the elderly members of the society. On the other hand, the elderly people living as ordinary residents experience some levels of difficulties in meeting their day to day expenses a...
