President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), currently referred to as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare, that went into effect in 2010, resulting in multiple fundamental shifts in the cost and practices of healthcare and insurance. According to (Bronner et al., 2021), Obamacare is widely recognized for extending coverage in healthcare to a significant US population, especially the uninsured. The objective further revolved around healthcare cost reduction and improving quality care. New Jersey’s population enjoyed the new healthcare reform, which guaranteed improved health security which primarily included lowering cost and expanding coverage. This paper identifies and analyzes the trends and results of the PPACA in New Jersey.
The impacts of the 2010 healthcare Act signed into law by the then US president, Obama, has raised multiple debates regarding its efficiency and importance among locals and policymakers, among other groups. It is important to note that the law granted states the right to embrace voluntary expansion. The results included a steady decline of about 40% of the uninsured population in New Jersey from 2013 to 2016. By 2017, the number of insured New Jersians had increased to millions, with Medicaid enrolment increasing rapidly. Its implementation and effectiveness include conversations around access, use, coverage, and outcomes, especially among low-income regions (Kominski et al., 2017). New Jersey is among the first states that adopted the Medicaid expansion resulting in low-income populations’ access to healthcare insurance under the waiver process in Section 1115. Additionally, Bronner et al. (2021) allude that “three hospitals in Florida and New Jersey were among those where patients spent at least ten days in intensive care during the last six months of life.” This resulted from the eligibility expansion that implied that New Jersians were increasingly exposed to Medicaid programs.
