Introduction
Cultural humility can be described as an enduring process of self-critique and self-exploration characterized by the willingness to learn from others. Based on this definition, cultural humility models an individual’s relationships with others tailored to honoring their customs, beliefs, and values. Cultural humility can also be conceptualized as frameworks applied in other disciplines to communicate individual and institutional conducts that lead to power imbalances, disparities in health outcomes, and marginalization of communities. This essay defines culture from a behavioral perspective, the value of including culture in client/participants’ contexts in research and practice, and describes the concept of cultural humility and the anticipated benefits of applying culturally sensitive approaches to research and practice. The paper also evaluates the necessary competencies for adopting culturally humble methodologies and avenues to create and sustain such skills. It also provides supporting models of culturally sensitive approaches in practice via behavioral analyst practitioners and researchers as well as anti-ABA autistics and advocates’ perspectives.
Culture from Behavioral Perspectives
According to Krieg (2020), psychologists have conceptualized culture as a set of shared beliefs, values, and practices triggered by the environment and spread to people in society. Depending on the commonly agreed-upon definition, culture is marked by a person’s private opinions, such as beliefs and values, and public behaviors, which are affected by primary characteristics of the physical environment, collectively shared by a particular group of people who transmit it to new members in the society. In addition, the behavioral model postulate that environment plays a vital role in shaping behavior as it affects retention and selection of conducts through generalizing a behavior reaction across a different stimulus via association.
The Value of Including Culture into Client/Participants’ Contexts in Research and Practice
Cultural sensitivity and understanding are essential in creating a comfortable environment where clients feel free to speak out about their problems without fear of judgment from the therapist. In this context, the cultural considerations during counseling will ensure the therapist keeps the client’s problem as a fundamental ethical principle in psychological practice. Accordingly, human beings are cultural beings; therefore, asserting cultural manifestation is critical in helping the therapist to identify and formulate a solid ground for understating the client’s aspects, such as religious belief, gender, and economic status in society, before attending to their problems (Surya, 2018).
