Observational Study Using Naturalistic Observation

Research Paper Instructions:

This week’s Journal Activity will have you conduct your own observational study using naturalistic observation. In using a naturalistic observation, you should observe people who you do not know in a public setting. You should not interact with the people you are collecting data on and you should not collect any identifying information on the individuals you are observing.
For this activity, choose a public area where there are people for at least fifteen minutes (e.g., mall, restaurant, café, park) for your study. Then, create a research question and hypothesis that has to do with people's potential behaviors in this environment. Next, identify what specific behaviors you want to collect data on to test your hypothesis.
Find a crowded area where there are people for at least fifteen minutes (e.g., mall, restaurant, baseball game, or waiting room). Then, create a research question and hypothesis that has to do with people's behaviors in this environment. Next, identify what specific behaviors you want to collect data on to test your hypothesis.
Using the Unit 7 Journal Template, collect 15 minutes of data and in 1-2 pages, present the following information:
Your research question
Your hypothesis
15 minutes of collected data
A summary of how you interpret the data and if it confirms or disconfirms your hypothesis
You can present 15 minutes of collected data in a paragraph or in a table format. Your response needs to make it clear that your observation lasted for at least 15 minutes and that your data is spanning this time frame. You do not need to run any statistical analyses on the data you collect.

What is your research question?
What is the primary activity that makes individuals visit a mall?
What is your hypothesis?
The majority of people visit a mall for shopping, entertainment, and relaxation.
Provide a summary of the data that you collected during your 15 minutes of observation.
I visited a nearby mall and sat on one of the benches where I could see people who entered and left the mall. I observed the behaviors of individuals from 4:00 p.m. to around 4:15 p.m. During the 15 minutes I sat on the bench, about 200 people entered and left the mall. I was interested to see if individuals leaving the mall carried anything, meaning that they had purchased things from the mall. For those people I saw entering and never saw them leave, I assumed they were shopping, entertaining themselves, or relaxing while taking coffee or other beverages with their friends in the restaurants (Makgopa, 2016). The data I gathered showed whether individuals exiting the mall carried something or not. Since it was during the weekend, the flow of people in and out of the mall was high. However, I noted that many individuals who entered the mall left with something. When it comes to males, they entered with nothing and left with shopping bags or trolleys full of products as they headed to the parking area. Females entered with handbags and left with shopping bags.
Approximately 60% of people who entered the mall left with something, and 20% did not leave. In addition, 20% left the same way they entered the mall. The majority of individuals who entered the mall with their families did not leave within 15 minutes. Moreover, there was this group of people who did not stay in the mall for even five minutes. I assumed that such individuals went to deposit or wit...
