Visit the Red Cross website (www(dot)redcross(dot)org) and explore the resources for emergency preparedness. Choose one of the emergency preparedness topics (i.e., hurricane, tornado, flood, earthquake, or fire) and one area of need for preparedness (i.e., home and family, school and students, or workplace and employees) and then present a plan for preparedness that looks at how one might prepare for one of these types of emergencies in one of the areas. For example, how would one prepare for a flood in the workplace or for an earthquake at a school?
Your paper should address each of the following:
•Identify the emergency preparedness topic you have chosen (i.e., hurricane, tornado, flood, earthquake, or fire) and the area of need (i.e., home and family, school and students, or workplace and employees) and briefly describe the surrounding circumstances.
•Apply the emergency preparedness topic to one area of need, presenting a detailed plan that could be given to the human services managers who will respond to the type of emergency and area of need you have specified.
Discuss and cite at least two of the assigned readings for Module 3 and at least one additional credible or scholarly source to support your analysis and positions. According to the redcross.org (2015), if a fire happens to start in a house, the residents of that house would only have two minutes to escape. They go further to explain that the most effective way to protect oneself and the home from fire is to identify and get rid of the fire hazards. 60% of deaths caused by house fires occur in a home without working smoke alarms. In 2013 alone 369,500 home fires took place killing 2,755 civilians, injuring 12,200 civilians and causing a direct property damage worth $6.8 billion (Nfpa.org, 2015). These statistics show the magnitude of loss that home fires can bring. There is a need to for a comprehensive emergency plan that can help in the preparation of such a calamity.
Before a Home Fire
There are some steps that one can take to prevent a home fire one of them being avoiding to smoke in the bed. Furthermore, one should turn off the portable heaters when they go to sleep or leave the room. Other considerations may include keeping items that catch fire three feet away from anything that easily gets hot such as space heaters. Children should be regularly talked to about the dangers of fire, and also, keep lighters and matches out of their reach.
Smoke Alarms
There is a need to install smoke alarms on each level of the home and outside every sleeping area. However, it is not enough to only install alarms as it is required that they are tested at least once a month. There is a need to change batteries at least once every year and carry out replacement every ten years. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should never be disabled.. As a way of complimenting the alarm systems, the home owners should consider installing an automatic residential fire sprinkler system.
Fire Escape Planning
It is also important to ensure that all household members know at least two ways to escape from all rooms found in your home. Everyone should know where to gather outside in case of a fire.
