Research Paper Instructions:

Assignment instructions below. Paper has to be original. ASSIGNMENT 01 SC260 Ecology Directions: Be sure to make an electronic copy of your answer before submitting it to Ashworth University for grading. Unless otherwise stated, answer in complete sentences, and be sure to use correct English spelling and grammar. Sources must be cited in APA format. Your response should be one (1) single-spaced page in length; refer to the "Assignment Format" page for specific format requirements. 1. Describe global patterns of atmospheric heating and circulation. What mechanisms produce high precipitation in the tropics? What mechanisms produce high precipitation at temperate latitudes? What mechanisms produce low precipitation in the tropics? (60 points) 2. Use what you know about atmospheric circulation and seasonal changes in the sun’s orientation to earth to explain the highly seasonal rainfall in the tropical dry forest and tropical savanna biomes. (Hint: Why does the rainy season in these biomes come during the warmer months?) (40 points) ______________________________________________________ THIS IS THE END OF ASSIGNMENT 01.

Global patterns of atmospheric heating and circulation.
The patterns of atmospheric heating and circulation occur through air movement, and typically happen through convection where there is energy transfer the earth’s surface (Satoh, 2013). This process takes place because of unequal heating on the earth’s surface, which then influences precipitation patterns. Warm atmospheric air moves from low attitudes to high attitudes, while cold atmospheric air shifts from the high attitudes towards low attitudes. Heat in the atmosphere facilitates circulation, which takes place at the troposphere part of atmosphere nearest to the earth (Satoh, 2013).
High precipitation in the tropics
Sun heat affects precipitation patterns in the tropics by heating the atmosphere and the earth’s surface. After heating, there is resultant air expansion in the tropics leading to a rise in the warm air. The rising warm air meets cool air and this is accompanied by reduced water vapor. Consequently, the rising air condenses resulting in cloud formation, which then triggers rainfall and rainy weather. Furthermore, the sunrays hit the equator directly, while trade winds converge at the equator all triggering high precipitation in the tropics.
High precipitation at temperate latitudes
Temperate areas have warm summers and cool winters, and hence the weather patterns are not extreme. Dry air from the deserts at around 30° separates the tropics from the temperate region (Satoh, 2013), and in these, temperate zones warm air moving towards the polar regions meets cool air from the poles resulting to cloud formation that trigger high precipitation in the temperate latitudes.
Low precipitation in the tropics
Air temperatures affect precipitation, and warm temperatures result to more precipitation. However, insulation of ...
