Summary
In Julia Zorthian’s article, “What we know about the Ohio State University attack”. (2016, November 29) on Time.com, Zorthian covers a story of the a Somali-born student who plowed his car a group of pedestrians and the got out and began stabbing people with a butcher Knife on 28th November, 2016 at Ohio university. Later the the attacker was shot to death by an officer. According to an eyewitness, the car skewed over the sidewalks and hit everyone who was walking in front. Reportedly, the incident left 11 people injured and they were rushed to hospital where one was in a critical condition. From the causalities, it is reported, four were hit by the car, two stabbed by knife while other were injured in the pandemonium. In the moment of the attack, the reports from the school thought of the attacker as an active shooter and took to twitter and update about it. The attack happened near the campus’ engeneering building and the school emergency management team acted swiftly and told people to run and hide for safety. About an hour later, the scene was secured by the police as the attacker was shot. So far, the authorities have not confirmed whether the incidence was an act of terrorism or not.
Later the police confirmed the attacker was a Muslim by the name Abdul Razak Ali Artan and a student at Ohio State University. At a press conference held by the Ohio State University, The Police Chief Craig Stone said that the attacker executed the crime on purpose basing common knowledge. In the confirmation, Artan was identified as an 18 years old of Somali origin who had moved to the US with his family in 2007 from Somali. He became a permanent resident of the US and settled on Ohio after having lived in Dallas temporarily. Further investigation revealed that Artan took to Facebook and wrote. “America! Stop interfering with other countries, especially Muslim Ummah (Group). We are not weak. We are not weak, remember that,” Other reports indicated the Artan’s frustrations also emanates from scariness to conduct his Muslims prayers in the open. The revelation puts Artan’s actions as intentionally and triggered by religion factors. In response both the Ohio State University President Michael Drake and President Barack Obama condemned the incidence where the former termed is a tragic situation.
Social Theories
Analytically, Artan’s case of crime can be interpreted in a sociological perspective with the aid of sociological theories in criminology. The two applicable theories in this case include social process theory and choice theory, To begin with, Social process theory perceives the incidences of criminality as a function of human interactions in the social places such the working place, institutions like schools, religions relations and other process of life in the society.
