During colonialism, there were Spanish and English arrivals in America in the late 1500s. In North Carolina was an island, Roanoke, which had around 150 inhabitants. Once there were settlers, they mapped the area and prepared for the coming of the second group. The second group worked on protecting the area from neighboring enemies. When war broke between the English and Spanish, the Queen ordered a ship to be used for a fierce fight. Three years into the war, the captain returned and found nobody in the place. According to History.com Staff (2012), this was a mysterious site, as he only found some engraving reading ‘Croatoan.’
