In China, embroidery is an art that has a long history. Though it is not precisely known when embroidery began in China, it is largely associated with the Han Dynasty. Archeological excavations found near Lake Baikal dates back to the Han Dynasty in second century B.C. Further, Chinese embroidery is believed to have developed due to silk production. While men used to do embroidery, it soon became evident women were more skilled at this art. For this reason, young Chinese girls had to learn the skill as they prepared to get married (Wang 19). Local women developed embroidery as a way of decorating their clothes, bedclothes, as well as pouches. The stitching of the pieces was so fine and precisely done that it took people several years to complete. The finest embroidery pieces were extremely costly. With time, embroidery in China became a pastime for the wealthy women and among members of the court. Wang (19) argues that there are two main categories of embroidery, which are the “chin wen” and “tuan chen.” “Chin wen” makes use of the long and short stich while “tuan chen” makes use of the seed stitch often known as French knot.
There are four renowned types of embroidery in China. The first one is Su Xiu (Suzhou) in the providence of Jiangsu and it dates back around 2000 years.
