What should be done to solve the child-obesity epidemic?
It could be more serious than you ever imagined. Child-obesity in America is a real epidemic that faces the children from all the socio-economic classes. The Center for Disease Control has found that about thirty two percent of the children and adolescents are overweight; this translates to twenty five million kids are obese as noted by ( Hellmich, USA Today, First lady says: 'Let's move' on child obesity). She further observed that obesity has a huge impact on the life expectancy of the next generation with a study conducted in 2005 finding that kids may have their lives two to five years shorter than that of their parents because of obesity. Obesity predisposes our kids to the types of diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol levels which lead to cardiovascular diseases. In her article ( Hellmich) notes that the first lady laments that according to government data, a weight-related medical bill costs the country a whooping $147 billion annual. This epidemic surely calls for concerted efforts to deal with it.
According to the (Georgia Department of Public Health: 2010 Georgia Data Summary on obesity in children and youth), research have shown that obese children are likely to remain so into adulthood. According to the data, 15% of children between two to four years in Georgia are obese. Data also shows that 24% of children in third grade, 15% of middle school students and 12% of high school are obese. (Georgia Department of Public Health) notes that Georgia exceeds the Healthy People 2010 national goal for children and youths from all ages, race, sex and ethic group where the goal targets obesity levels of 14.6 % among children and youths. (Georgia Department of Public Health) attributes this high numbers to poor diet and physical inactivity. The department found that only 52% of middle school students and 43% high school students in Georgia meet the recommended CDC requirements for physical activity. The data shows that 44% of children in middle school and 39% in high school spend three hours on a school day on TV. (Georgia Department of Public Health) also noted that only 17% of high school students in Georgia consume 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily. This statistics acts as a pointer to show that childhood obesity is a national epidemic in America.
The war efforts to kick obesity out the America got a major boost when the first lady rolled out the ‘Let`s move` campaign with the mission and call to eliminate childhood obesity in a generation. The mind blogging question is what really needs to be done to deal with this epidemic? For the first lady, she targets to use all her power in state house to promote a comprehensive campaign with the focus on healthy food in schools, better food labeling and setting up of grocery stores in communities that lack groceries. She also aims to use public service announcements in efforts to get the children more active. However, helps some of her plans require the approval of the congress like those touching on tax incentives. Her campaigns are at a national level where she intends lobby support from different stakeholders.
