Research Paper First Draft Outline
Though finding a good topic is trickyb an argumentative essay's structure is fairly straightforward.
If you look at page 283, you'll find that the body is broken up into three sections, each of these parts will have more than one paragraph.:
Introduction
"Factual Overview of issues"--these are neutral, just simple facts.
"Explanation of opposing views"--this is a required section of your paper, so you MUST have a topic that has a clear opposing view! Be 100% sure you're not doing an expository essay, everyone!
"Argument for your view"--The other side might have some good points, maybe, but in balance, your side is better when you consider all the evidence.

YOUR TASK:
Complete the following with your own information (see pages 290-293 for advice). DO NOT ANSWER IN PARAGRAPHS. Incomplete ideas are FINE. See page 332 for an example of an outline!:
I Introduction.
a. Hook (required)
b. Identify your topic (required)
c. State your purpose (required)
d. Thesis statement (required)
e. A little background information on the topic (optional. This information should be in greater detail in your paper in any case)
f. Stress the importance of the topic (optional. This information could be actually be "the hook" at the beginning)
II: Review of the facts 1 (Include NO analysis or judgement in these paragraphs. Just the facts and background. Remember in your rhetorical analysis, when you described just the ad? It's like that, but with an issue)
a. Topic 1
b. Topic 2
III. Opposing viewpoints (NOT YOUR SIDE. . . sometimes people will disagree with your point for different reasons. You can have a paragraph for each idea). Use a dry, factual tone here.
a. Topic 1
b. Topic 2
IV. Argument for your side. You'll need to respond to your opponent's ideas, then add your own. Use more colorful, persuasive language here.
a. Topic 1
b. Topic 2
V. Conclusion
a. Transition (Ex: In conclusion . . . ; in summary . . .; In closing . . .; etc.)
b. Thesis statement --not copied, but restated
c. Stress the importance of the topic to the readers
d. Call your readers to action (required)
e. The future of this topic (optional)
Research Essay Topics and Sources
As I mentioned in class, we should be thinking about our topics for our research papers by now. I'd like for us to find resources from the great Opposing Viewpoints Database of the library.
Here is what you're going to do:
1) Go to the Opposing Viewpoints Database in UB Library website http://ic(dot)galegroup(dot)com/ic/ovic/?p=OVIC&u=sunybuff_main
2) Browse topics and look for one that matches what you'd like to work on.
3) Find 2 sources from the Opposing Viewpoints database.
4) Write a brief description of your topic and the citations from the two sources in Opposing Viewpoints in a Word document or Pdf and attach it here. Thanks!
REMEMBER: GOOD TOPICS are ARGUABLE and can be supported by research. There should be an opposing viewpoint (That's why they call the database Opposing Viewpoints, everybody). Look around the database, especially the "Voices" articles for inspiration.
Examples of bad topics include:
Cigarettes are bad (Obviously. . . there's no argument there. You're not just writing a report for this assignment. You'd need to be more specific about an aspect of smoking, such as advertisements, the effectiveness of anti-smoking strategies, the law. . . )
McDonald's food is bad for you (Again, no real argument. McDonald's probably admits that freely. You need to think of an "an angle", a viewpoint that you can argue and research)
Addiction (Too general. What are you going to say about it? Drugs are bad? Again, you need to be specific.)
X Box One is Better than PS4 (Close. It is arguable, there are far too many opinions involved and there is not going to be enough good academic resources about it, probably).

Should the Government Recommend eSports?
Introduction
Sports form a vital part of the human life and experience. It is a source of entertainment to some but to others, it is the primary source of income. Soccer, basketball, hockey, volleyball, athletics, golf among other "physical" sports dominate television screens and millions of spectators regularly turn up in stadiums to watch such sports, all over the world. With the steady technological improvement globally, electronic sports (eSports) have also taken center stage as a source of entertainment and income. However, debates have continuously raged on regarding whether eSports should be recognized as sports. This paper evaluates the two sides to the debate and argues that it is a high time the government recognizes and recommends eSports, just like other "physical" sports.
Factual Overview of eSports
ESports is a game scene where players, specialized in specific games, form teams called clans and compete with one another in tournaments, using computers (Martončik 208). ESports is known by such terms as cyber sports, virtual sports, gaming, computer gaming, competitive gaming, competitive video gaming, and electronic sports (Jenny et al. 1). These terms will be used interchangeably throughout this paper. Among a range of various eSports, Smite, League of Legends, Heroes and other DOTA games, and Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) have largely defined modern cyber sports.
