Abstract
Mental illness and substance abuse reduce economic productivity of individuals while also placing a burden on the government and society. Despite their distinction, individuals who abuse drugs are likely to be diagnosed with mental illnesses while those who suffer from any type of mental illness are likely to engage in drug abuse. In case of a dual diagnosis, the resulting health problem is usually magnified thus increasing the challenges of treating and managing the affected individuals. Despite the strong connection, only a small portion of the health literature addresses the close relationship that exists between mental illnesses drug abuse. Therefore, this research seeks to evaluate the relation between mental illness and drug abuse among people of all ages.
The connection between the two health issues will be examined using a systematic approach, which involves the review of available literature, extraction of data, and synthesis of the findings. The findings of this research will facilitate the establishment of an integrated treatment approach that effectively addresses the complex health and societal needs of individuals who abuse drugs but are also diagnosed with a particular mental disorder. Background
`Substance abuse and mental illness have a complicated connection. Nevertheless, about 53% of substance addicts are prone to experiencing one form of mental disorder while 50% of mental illness patients’ abuse drugs at one point (Buckley, 2016). This implies that drug abuse and mental illness establish the perfect condition for the other to emerge while worsening and enhancing the state of the existing condition. Numerous studies show that excessive alcohol consumption leads to depression and anxiety while experiencing ADHD and bipolar disorder influence a person to become a substance user (Kessler; 2017; Brown, 2010). Nevertheless, the degree of association between mental illness and substance abuse differs depending on gender. Since men are more likely to abuse drugs, they are also more likely to undergo dual diagnosis than women.
During adolescence, teens usually experience internalizing disorders such as depression and anxiety before engaging in substance abuse. Consequently, Brown (2010) states that 55% of teens being treated for any mental illness have symptoms that tie them to the abuse of at least one illegal drug. However, other studies show that mental disorder is not connected to substance abuse in any way. For example, the research of Boyle et al. (2014) identified no relationship between anxiety and depression and the abuse of tobacco or cannabis. Due to the lack of a direct connection between mental diseases and drug abuse, Sartor et al. (2020) argue that the link between the two health problems can only be explained using common risk factors such as epigenetic experiences, traumatic childhood experiences, and genetic vulnerability. Indeed, epigenetic factors, genetic vulnerabilities, and traumatic experiences cause both mental illness and drug addiction; however, the connection between mental illness and substance abuse cannot be ignored.
