Creating Entrepreneurial Leaders
Identify 3 Experiences
The leadership development program was quite impactful and helped to open my mind to different perspectives regarding leadership. I was able to learn a lot and be challenged about the whole idea of leadership and why there is a need to be trained in leadership. Often, people make assumptions regarding many things in life, and these assumptions end up being quite costly later on in life. However, while learning to lead or be a leader, one cannot live on assumptions. There is a need to make a logical judgment and fight to establish control through ways and means that enhance one’s belief in their growth as a leader. However, leaders must also learn to judge themselves aptly and refuse the temptation to consider themselves above or beyond the threshold. During the MSEL Program, several things became clearer and made me develop a different outlook on leadership. Also, I had three different experiences that greatly impacted my life and shaped my perception as a leader.
First, I had a personal experience that greatly shaped my leadership outlook. I made an error in judgment that greatly shaped my understanding of leadership. In life, it is always easier when someone else makes an error, and we get the chance to correct such mistakes or point out ways in which they could do things differently and better. However, on this particular occasion, I was the one who made an error in judgment, and even though the repercussions were not as dire, I learned a few things that helped to transform my mindset and how I should approach such situations later on in life. First, there is a need to understand the error or mistake. Is it a technical, strategic, ethical, or professional error or mistake? What are the potential repercussions of the same? Secondly, there is a need to understand that it will take time to deal with the same consequences. Lastly, regardless of the aftermath of the error in judgment, a leader must learn something and make changes to their strategy or personal approach to situations. Leadership is a journey of growth, and mistakes are part of the journey. I cannot be at my best or my best self without a few glitches. I have to acknowledge my weaknesses and continue to work hard. I mix my strengths and weaknesses, and having this understanding helps me learn and seek to become a better person and leader every day.
The other experience I had and that greatly impacted me was the art of submission. Leadership is about being at the top and calling the shots for most people. People have to submit to you, take orders, and abide by your instructions. However, I learned that to be a better leader, one must learn the art of submission. Leadership is a call to serve. Taking it from the angle or point of being at the top robs it of its essence. Any leader who has managed to climb the ladder of success is willing to listen, learn under the mentorship of another person, and understand their goal is to serve. Leadership has to be about submission to a call or duty and not being elevated to another level or position. It is never about the individual.
Finally, another experience entailed feedback. At one point...
