China is known to be a major polluter in the world today. The economic growth that China has experienced in the current years has been the fastest among the major nations. The economic growth is a key aspect of the widespread air pollution that is experienced in China. The top twenty cities of the world that have the worst air pollution are made up of 16 cities in China with Beijing included on the list. As a result of the extensive air pollution, Environmental Sustainability Index of China is ranked close to the lowest in the world. There are various factors that are attributed to being the causes of the widespread air pollution in Beijing. The air pollution also has effects on the general public and the government is trying hard to fight the situation in Beijing and its surroundings.
The factors attributed to causing the extensive air pollution in Beijing include the massive economic growth, an increase in the number of motor-powered vehicles, growth in population, output from the natural resources and manufacturing which is inclusive of the topography around the city and the seasonal weather experienced in the city, (Betts, Kellyn). china as a country has also undergone major economic growth which has led to a radical rise in Gross Domestic Product. The drastic increase in capital can be associated with an increase in pollution. Individuals are able to afford motor vehicles as a result of the increase in wealth. Almost 70% of the air pollution in Beijing s contributed to the emissions from motor vehicles.
The ever-swelling population of China and Beijing is another contributor to pollution. The population of Beijing grew from 11 million to 16 million in only 7 years. The smog that is present in Beijing is also a result of Coal burning factories which rely on outdated and inefficient technologies (Betts, Kellyn). The mountains surrounding Beijing warrant that pollution remains within the city.
