A literature review analyzes how current research supports the PICOT, as well as identifies what is known and what is not known in the evidence. Students will use the information from the earlier PICOT Statement Paper and Literature Evaluation Table assignments to develop a 750-1,000 word review that includes the following sections:

Introduction section
A comparison of research questions
A comparison of sample populations
A comparison of the limitations of the study
A conclusion section, incorporating recommendations for further research

A literature review is a description, summary and detailed explanation of books, articles, journals and important sources related to a topic being researched. In this case, nurse shortage is the topic under evaluation with different multiple sources being reviewed. The nursing shortage is a problem affecting the United States of America healthcare systems due to an insufficient number of nurses which leads to the workload of the staff that has been employed in the hospitals and clinics. Many factors have to lead to persistent of this problem in the country and they include; pressure, aging population and low salary among others. This paper will be comparing nursing shortage in existing pieces of literature both old and current literary works.
Each literature chosen for review contains research questions that had been used to come into conclusion about the issue surrounding the nursing shortage. Some of the questions revolved around strategies to use to solve this problem, while others questioned the satisfaction of the profession on the nurses. Plenty of literature before 2010 revolved around factors and issues that affect nursing shortages in health care systems. Some of these articles appraised the issue as to why nurses were bent on leaving the job and the reason as to why there are few graduates from nursing schools. Impacts of nursing shortage on the clinic, patients and the nurses, in general, have also been discussed by some of the articles in the questions and objectives that these articles focused on. Such questions include nurses' intention to leave the profession.
After 2010 research questions changed directions towards looking for strategies and interventions on ways to improve the continuous challenge of shortage of nurses in hospitals especially in critical and emergency rooms. Reviewed articles focused on the high turnover rates of nurses and the factors that drive this problem. Dissatisfaction at work is another question that prompted the write and reviews the articles that focus or aim at an understanding of the nursing shortage. These show the difference that has changed from the 90s to the current years. Other scholarly articles focused on ways that nursing managers in healthcare systems deal and overcome the nursing shortage. Retention of nurses in clinics is another issue that has gained focus in most reviewed articles and journals. Determinants and factors that cause a nursing shortage in the current years in various countries like Poland have also been raised as ways of addressing the nursing shortage. Policies affecting local and global nursing shortages also show the shift in how the problem is being assessed.
In these articles, the kind of data used was mostly qualitative data and samples taken were either traditionally written or electronically obtained. Samples taken were from the 80s to the current year in which the article is being written.
