The outbreak of COVID-19 has had a notable influence on healthcare systems worldwide, particularly in regard to the management and containment of infectious diseases. According to Shiffman (2017), global health networks such as the WHO confront obstacles in preserving coordination, mobilizing resources, ensuring accountability, and prioritizing concerns. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on preventing and managing other infectious diseases, the WHO and UN have encountered significant challenges in addressing these matters. This essay will analyze these challenges and propose solutions to address them.
A significant obstacle confronted by the WHO and UN is allocating resources towards tackling the effects of COVID-19 on the prevention and management of other contagious illnesses. The COVID-19 outbreak has tremendously strained healthcare infrastructure and resources, resulting in a scarcity of healthcare practitioners and equipment. Consequently, healthcare resources and personnel have been redirected from other health concerns, such as managing sexually transmitted diseases and antenatal healthcare services, as highlighted in the case study. The WHO and UN have urged increased financing for healthcare infrastructure and resources to tackle these challenges.
The WHO and UN have encountered difficulty in holding responsible parties for the effects of COVID-19 on the prevention and treatment of other contagious diseases. The COVID-19 outbreak has brought to light preexisting inequities in healthcare access and outcomes, especially for underprivileged groups. To tackle these inequalities, the WHO and UN have underlined the importance of fair and inclusive healthcare policies and interventions.
