Case Assignment
In the attachments epidemiologic data collected on an unknown pathogen.
Your task for this case assignment:
1 Describe these data by person, place, and time (i.e. descriptive epidemiology). For more information on descriptive epidemiology, please refer to the Module 3 Home Page.
2 Provide possible explanations for the pattern of this disease.
Length: Case assignments should be at least 3 pages (750 words) in length.
References: At least two references must be included from academic sources (e.g. peer-reviewed journal articles). Required readings are included. Quoted material should not exceed 10% of the total paper (since the focus of these assignments is critical thinking). Use your own words and build on the ideas of others. When material is copied verbatim from external sources, it MUST be enclosed in quotes. The references should be cited within the text and also listed at the end of the assignment in the References section (APA format recommended).
Organization: Subheadings should be used to organize your paper according to question
Format: APA format is recommended for this assignment. See Syllabus page for more information on APA format.
Grammar and Spelling: While no points are deducted, assignments are expected to adhere to standards guidelines of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence syntax. Points may be deducted if grammar and spelling impact clarity.
The following items will be assessed in particular:
3 Achievement of learning objectives for case assignment
4 Relevance (e.g. all content is connected to the question)
5 Precision (e.g. specific question is addressed. Statements, facts, and statistics are specific and accurate).
6 Depth of discussion (e.g. present and integrate points that lead to deeper issues)
7 Breadth (e.g. multiple perspectives and references, multiple issues/factors considered)
8 Evidence (e.g. points are well-supported with facts, statistics and references)
9 Logic (e.g. presented discussion makes sense, conclusions are logically supported by premises, statements, or factual information)
10 Clarity (e.g. writing is concise, understandable, and contains sufficient detail or examples)
Objectivity (e.g. avoid use of first person and subjective bias)

Introduction
Incident rates of unknown diseases can be described using different characteristics including gender, age, and the demographic characteristics as some of the significant features. The patterns of the disease can be analyzed using epidemiological data collected at specific times, places, and from specific persons. This is commonly referred to as descriptive epidemiology. This paper will analyze the pathogen of the unknown disease in the US using some of the key characteristics.
Based on the data collected from different states, the unknown disease incidences affected more men than women with the highest rate being 7.5 percent case per 100,000 population. The most affected age ranged between 45 to 55 and 9 years respectively. The least affected age for men was between 20 to 35 years. For women, the most affected age was also between 45 to 55 years while the least affected age was 20 to 29 years. The pattern exhibited demonstrates that the older adults are the most affected by the unknown disease. This could be possible because of the levels of immunity. Young people have strong immune systems (Minaker, 2011). Hence, they are resistance to diseases compared to the older population. Immune system protects the body from infections. According to medical experts, as people grow old, the immune system gets weaker, increasing the risk of disease infections (Minaker, 2011). Even vaccines may not work well as expected.
The unknown disease greatly affected ten states in the US namely New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Maryland Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Delaware. The most affected states were Connecticut at 66.7 percent followed by Rhode Island at 44.8 percent, then New Jersey at 19.9 percent. The least affected states were Minnesota, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin. The unknown disease was commonly found in the Eastern part of the country along the seashores and was also present in the Northeastern parts with few cases being reported in the central part of the country. These states are New Hampshire, Northern Carolina, Southern Carolina, New Jersey, Connecuiticut, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts. The Northeastern parts included the states like the New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The central states affected were mostly Kansas and Colorado.
The unknown pathogen exhibited to spread much within specific states especially those allocated along the seashores. The spread of the disease could be attributed to the water contamination along the regions...
