Group psychotherapy is a multidisciplinary approach combining individual therapy, psychopharmacological treatment, and support groups.There is an emphasis on group cohesion among the group members and with me as the counselor.Interpersonal relationships established between the group members are essential in treating addictions and offer a protective environment of group therapy to improve self-care.There is also a focus on defense mechanisms associated with denial, projection, and rationalization among those addicted in the group sessions.The group intervention also helps address the dysfunctions associated with substance use, such as social isolation and substance abuse.Group therapy is similar in efficacy to individual therapy but is more cost-effective.Group support has beneficial therapeutic effects, but there are limits and norms on group interaction where there is mutual trust and respect in the intervention. This is what is called the therapeutic framework.
