The passive viewer watches the movie but does not give full attention to it, more like skimming through and is always easily distracted, whereas an active viewer is involved in the movie, pays full attention to it and the message it sends, which they translate into their social and personal lives.
2 Discuss characteristics movies share with other art forms and also characteristics that are unique to cinema.
Both movies and other art forms have a storyline. They have a point of origin, which tends to guide their contents and have a perceived message that they intend to pass. The characters in both movies and films have their special and unique tones; each character is distinct from the other. Cinemas, on the other hand, have a unique characteristic of the film, it is a medium of art which refers to the entire movie industry.
3 Explain why most of a movie’s formal mechanisms remain invisible to the viewer. List and discuss some of these mechanisms.
Movies formal mechanisms remain invisible to the viewer to enable them to reinforce their interpretations, beliefs, and worldviews from the movies. They connect us to the story. Some of these mechanisms are:
The cultural analysis focuses on the assumptions and prejudices a movie conveys.
The formal analysis includes the elements in making a film, such as editing, cinematography, sounds which have been assembled to make the movie
Cinematic language is some techniques and concepts connect us to the film content.
4 Discuss the relationship between the decisions the filmmaker makes about form and style and the expectations a view has.
The decisions about the form and style target the audience. Filmmaker expects it will affect created content and how the viewers relate to it. Mostly, it targets the culture of those the movie intends to reach and their way of life concerning the movie content.
5 Define implicit meaning. List and discuss some factors that contribute to implicit meaning.
Implicit meaning is the interpretative meaning that goes beyond what is stated (MacDowell, 2015). Factors that contribute to implicit meaning are;
Audience interpretation- Each person gives a different meaning to events in a movie.
Movie setting has a major impact on the kind of meanings it will be giving out to its viewers.
Characters and Cast. From the roles assigned, a viewer can easily interpret the meaning of an action or word based on the character involved.
