Share your brilliant critical insight on a designed object of your choice in the real world.
STEP 1
Identify the big idea in a designed object in the real world. You are encouraged to select designed objects that are meaningful to you in some way; your interest, fascination, outrage, or passion will come through in your choice! You don’t need to choose a designed object that would be conventionally seen as great. It can be something you find hilarious, ridiculous, downright repulsive, or more.
STEP 2
Prepare a one-page presentation about the big idea in your designed object. You’ll need a couple of things to put your presentation together:
• A critical analysis of around 300 words in which you’ll make the case for the big idea you’re sharing about your designed object.
• Your write-up should include the following six parts; if it helps, think of each of them as one sentence.
1. What is the object and the key feature you’re focusing on?
2. What’s the big idea? 3. What was the problem or opportunity the designer/s sought to address? (Remember that problems need not always be the obvious ones!)
4. How well does the big idea serve as a solution to that problem or opportunity?
5. What other insightful observations can you make about its (presumed) design process and/or its development over time?
6. Overall, why is this big idea in your designed object significant, relevant, or otherwise worthwhile for us to consider?
• Finally, you’ll need a picture of your object so we know what you’re talking about!

The object is an office chair and the key feature is to attach sensors that alerts sitting on their sitting positions and allow them to readjust to the correct posture. The chair can also be operated via a mobile phone not only by the person occupying it but also by a companion.
