Jane Doe has a promising career at University Hospital. In six months of working, she has been promoted to Associate Director and tasked with overseeing consumer quality and satisfaction, which will be used to support the hospital’s new vision and mission. This is Jane’s first big assignment, which is to develop a campaign aimed toward adult learners across several departments. However, her project is at risk due to a 32-year veteran on her team, named John Doster, who is reluctant to participate.
Jane must find a way to leverage power and influence in order to encourage and motivate John to increase his performance and participation to ensure success of the project.

Power and influence are key in leadership. Power refers to having the ability to influence other peoples' behavior (UMN, 2010). In the case scenario presented, Jane and John have different types of power. The source of Jane's power is her position as an associate director, from which she draws authority. John's power comes from being a veteran in the field, which makes him an expert.
To get John on board, Jane can utilize several influence tactics. One of these is Rational persuasion, where she can use facts and logical reasoning to convince John to participate (UMN, 2010). Another tactic is Ingratiation, where Jane can offer John professional compliments and make him feel confident and good about himself. Additionally, Jane can use consultation to involve John in planning and decision-making. These tactics would help Jane influence John to get on board.
