Cold War History
Question One
The Cold War was as a result of mistrust between the United States, the Russian empire and the USSR. The United States fought alongside with the Soviet Union and Russia against the Axis powers. However, after World War II there arose a tension between the three parties. The USA was worried about the communism of the Soviet Union and the Russian ruler Joseph Stalin, who they considered was so thirsty for power and the need for Russia to control the world. The USSR was concerned about the fact that the USA did not recognize them as legitimate members of the front while the Russians were concerned about the late entry of the USA into the World War II long after Russia had lost several of their people. This led to a rise in tension among the members and mistrust among the three members CITATION His09 \l 1033 (History.com Staff).
As a way of avoiding direct confrontation with their former allies, the USA chose to use the containment strategy in keeping an eye on their friends. President Harry Truman, the American president at that time emphasized on the need to be vigilant and contain the Russia’s expansive tendencies that had become prevalent. Later the USA security expenditure was increased to provide funds for the building of new arms and put in place to counter any expansion efforts by the communists. In the year 1949, The Soviets became the first group to test an atomic bomb. President Truman announced that they were going to test a more dangerous hydrogen bomb. President Stalin of Russia followed suit with the bomb threat. At this time it was apparent of the silent, non-direct confrontations between the allies, what came to be known as the Cold War CITATION His09 \l 1033 (History.com Staff).
Question Two
President Truman ensured that he implemented the containment policy as a key strategy in containing the allies. The increased expenditure on weaponry led to the testing of the first Hydrogen bomb in the Eniwetok in the Marshall Highlands. The Bomb was so strong and fearful that it created a huge hole in the ocean floor, had the power to vaporize a highland and destroyed half of Manhattan. The Cold War was so real to the extent that it affected the lives of ordinary people who built bomb shelters in their backyards. Bomb drills were also practiced in public places such as schools as a way of making sure that people were ready in case of any attack.
To end the World War II, Germany surrendered unconditionally making them a ground for competition from the USSR, Russia and USA. Germany was divided into four sections, the French, the British, American and the Soviet. In 1949, the British, French and America formed the Federal Republic of Germany with its capital city in Bonn and at the same time the Soviet formed the Germany Democratic Republic with the capital in Berlin. The economy of Germany was destroyed during the World War II and they needed serious reconstruction and American was among the key countries that funded the reconstruction of GermanyCITATION Joh18 \p ", n.p" \l 1033...
