Based on your viewing of the Bitter Seeds documentary, and the supplementary readings answer these questions:
First, based solely on your viewing of the documentary, answer this question - ’Who do you think bears most responsibility for this problem, and what do you think should be done to reduce the number of farmer suicides?’
Next, read the three articles linked to on the Sakai course site. One is a Guardian article, One is a response from Monsanto, one is an article in a magazine (Mother Jones). The three have different explanations for the farmer suicides. Refer in detail to the articles cited, using quotations if you are directly quoting material.
2. What does each of the articles identify as the main cause behind the rise in farmer suicides?
3. Which of these explanations do you find most convincing? Why?
4. Which of these explanations do you find least convincing? Why?
5. Having now read the readings, read the final one - India's solution to this problem. Do you think this is a major step in the right direction? Is it enough?
6. Finally, I would like you to think of a core concept in the class textbook. In trying to think about globalization and complex global issues coming together in one place, what we put at the center of our focus is critical. Do we value the sustainability of the planet, of people or of the economy as the most important thing. In the case of cotton growing, especially genetically modified cotton grown in India, what do you feel is the most important thing to focus on, and the biggest challenge to overcome. Impact of the Bitter Seeds on Indian Farmers
The American company, Monsanto bears the responsibility of the consistent suicide cases among farmers in India. According to the farmers, the issue had never happened before the introduction of the seeds technology brought by the company. First, the farmers have to pay for the seeds every year, leading to high costs in farming. The Indian employees working for the company sell to get profits despite the impact of the action on the Indian natives. This action reveals betrayal in by some members of the community. The most severe reason for the increased number of suicide cases is the signing of false testimonials by illiterate farmers without knowledge (Idfa, 2016). The victims sign their farms under the names of other people resulting in desperation that leads to suicidal acts.
According to the Guardian, the farmers committed suicide due to a threat that the price of cotton could fall drastically, pests could invade their crops and prove resistance to chemicals and that the modern seeds had no reliability and they need a lot of water for irrigation. On the other hand, the responses from Monsanto prove that Indian farmers had exhibited the unethical act before the introduction of the seeds (Sandri, 1). The article gives claims that farmers commit suicide to disturbing societal issues. Finally, Mother Jones's reading relates the incidences of suicide to the introduction of modified seeds through advanced technology. The rates of suicide cases increased with the introduction of genetic seeds (Philpott, 3). The three articles give different reasons for the cause of suicides among Indian farmers.
The magazine article, Mother Jones is more convincing on the cause of suicide among the farmers. The genetic seeds are costly and the consistent buying every season results in high spending on the farmers (Philpott, 3). Also, managing genetically prepared crops might be difficult for the illiterate farmers leading to tremendous losses.
