Gustav Mahler is one among the most talented composers of the 19th century and early 20th century. His music could be categorized into mainly symphonic and song cycles that require enormous orchestras and choruses.
The piece No.5 consists of five movements. With the first, sixth and seventh symphonies this great composer had advanced the orchestration techniques which he had previously used in the earlier symphonies. Mahler cased his first symphony in five movements that could actually be grouped into three parts. Part I comprises of the 1st and 2nd movements; Part II only incudes the 3rd movement Scherzo; and Part III, comprises of the 4th and 5th movements - the famous Adagietto and the triumphant Rondo-Finale.
In the fist movement a solo trumpet guides in the funeral march. It is done in a slow measured walk. As it reaches its climax in the starting of phrase four, a tuba, three trombones, 6 horns and other three triumphs join in. The march continues for a short while before going back to the measured walk. The process is repeated twice. In the first one, B flat minor expresses grief and despair. The trumpet sounds at the same time with strings squeezing their hands. The passages at this point reaches climax before going back to the opening.
The second movement bears the name Hauptsatz which means the main movement. It begins with a key of A minor which is disconcerted passage in the same humor as the one above in section B. The 1st disconcerted collapses that happens in this movement leads to reoccurrence of the vital subject from the 2nd Trio of the 1st movement. This first movement is played while accompanied by babbling woodwind figures. The cellos start slowly playing a modification of the main subject of the first movement. On the other hand, the central march section directs to a triumphal echoing for the brass section. As it reaches climax it collapses again after which the movement ends gradually and inaudibly.
The 3rd movement, scherzo is a kind of movement which is celebratory. It has few dark moments with minor keys. Throughout the movement an opening of four horns recurs as a motif which finally brings to the end of the movement. Although one is not marked, it is comprehensible that another shorter, though precise pause, is suitable before the start of the third part.
The 4th movement is in F major and includes a single theme which has a diverse middle part in which the subject is browbeaten in three other keys before returning to F. These other keys are G flat, D major and E major. The movement is marked Sehr Iangsam and also has several directions at places such as Nicht schleppen.
