Intercultural communication is a vital part of today’s globalized society. Now, look at a fictional situation in which someone from a Western culture interacts with people from a collectivist culture, like Japan. For the best cross-cultural communication with people from a collectivist culture like Japan, it is best to consider some key points. Active listening and nonverbal signs are essential in Japanese culture, where listening carefully and showing interest in what is being said is highly valued (Sakamoto, 2022). You can show interest and respect for another person’s point of view by nodding, keeping eye contact, and giving vocal hints like “I see” or “I get it.” These are all examples of active listening. Replicating nonverbal cues, like making a modest bow when appropriate, can also be an excellent way to build trust (Deacon & Miles, 2022). These things show that you understand how important their input is and are trying to understand their point of view.
