Many people are debating how to best meet energy needs in the United States. Some argue that the country must decrease its dependence on oil and invest in alternative sources of energy, such as wind and solar power. Others argue that changing to new power sources is unnecessary and expensive. They state that the United States should search for oil in Alaska, the Gulf Coast, and other currently unexplored areas within the country. American people are divided; some are saying we drill while others are saying no. this so evident even from the presidents view of things. For a long time many Americans have always believed of the expansion of oil exploration here at home. The companies that are in this business have always waited for this sole decision to be effected to enhance the American oil production. Brewer points out that the oil products are highly demanded in US and home exploration not only will it make more available but also cheaper. The only major problem to this issue is the federal laws and restrictions that stand against the domestic exploration. There are a lot of benefits American people can gain from the drilling however the people against the move have been very busy spreading incorrect information about a world that is transformed (Brewer, 2000).
The most important argument for drilling is that the additional drilling of oil at home will compensate the extra oil requirement America have been importing from other countries. The American oil deficit last year was about $57 billion while the oil import tab was roughly about 52 billon US dollars. This will make the government use the money it used to import oil in other areas of our economy. There have been concerns about oil exploration negatively affecting the local economy. This has been an issue when the drilling site is very close to the beaches thus destroying the beautiful view for the tourists. Yes I agree on this not however, the current legislation offers a distance of 50 miles away from these sceneries. This distance is quite enough to ensure that the drilling equipments are not visible to the tourists at the beach hence not a strong point to work against exploration (Brewer, 2000).
