Comparison and Contrast of the Philosophies, Ideas, and Approaches of Rousseau and Comenius Name: Institution: Comparison and Contrast of the Philosophies, Ideas, and Approaches of Rousseau and Comenius Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a French Philosopher, was born in 1712 and died in 1778. Rousseau is commonly known as the writer of the Age of Enlightenment. He is famously known for his social contract theory that hugely influenced the French Revolution. John Amos Comenius was an educational reformer and a theologian of the Moravian religion. He is commonly known as the father of modern education although his early education was irregular. Being a theologian, Comenius believed in prophecies and dreams. Comenius said that it was possible for the whole of the human race to be educated. He came up with this belief after he escaped religious persecution. Comenius was a leading education philosopher at this time. He came up with the idea of segregating school according to the levels and age (Dobinson, 1970). Children aged from seven to twelve would join a vernacular school where they would be taught religion, ethics among other subjects. Those aged thirteen to eighteen would then be taught Latin, which was then grammar. The courses that involved arts and sciences would be studied further. Nowadays, classes are grouped by age. Rousseau said that he disliked books because they taught about things no one was aware of. He helped bring the educational revolution in France through his work “Emile.” In the book, he talks about how children should be allowed to play in the sunlight since that is how they learn best.
