Course Outline
A course outline is a necessary component of every course policy as it provides a roadmap for both learners and educators. It details the learning objectives, how the learning process will occur, and the necessary materials needed to execute it. According to Foulger et al. (2019), a course outline serves as information on preparing for the semester, including self-management skills, guidance on spending time outside of class, ideas on how to thrive on exams, and ordinary erroneous judgments, or blunders, and detailed review approaches.
The course outline can be used as a contract between the learners and instructors by setting out the rules and what is expected to happen in the learning process (Eberly et al., 2001). It describes appropriate procedures such as sitting for exams and submitting assignments. It creates a clear distinction of responsibilities between the learner and the educator. Any deviation from the set rules or activities can easily attract penalties or punishment on the side of the instructor and the learners. Therefore, as a contractual document, the course outline should be adhered to by both parties for mutual collaboration and a smooth flow of the learning process.
