Etiologic Agent of SARS
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) refers to a viral respiratory infection caused by a life-threatening coronavirus (CDC, 2019). Coronaviruses are a group of SARS with a crown-like shape observed under a microscope and are the leading cause of severe to moderate upper-respiratory infections in humans. They also cause severe infections in animals, including respiratory, liver, and gastrointestinal disorders. Further, coronaviruses have been associated with pneumonia infections in humans, especially with weak defense systems. The discovery of the virus was shocking since it had never been seen in humans or animals before.
Preventive and Curative Measures of SARS
Researchers are still working on the preventive and curative methods of SARS. Several vaccines have been developed, but they are still to be tested on humans. However, the following guidelines are advised if someone is in the presence of SARS patients to ensure they prevent themselves from contracting the infection (CDC, 2019):
* Washing hands with hot water or alcohol-based sanitizers.
