Levels of evidence, also known as the hierarchy of evidence, is a ranking system used to outline the solidity of results obtained from clinical research studies. They are allocated to reflections based on methodological design quality and ability to be applied to patient care. The search is conducted from top to bottom (Armstrong, 2018).
Level I
At this level, experimental studies are carried out, and a meta-analysis of all randomized control trials (RCTs) is considered. Evidence-based clinical practices are generated from system reviews of several RCTs with similar results. Good systematic reviews will depend on focused clinical questions; hence assessment must be reproducible.
Level II
Evidence is obtained from a population selected at random and a control group, also known as a random controlled trial (RCT). In nursing, well-designed RCTs play a role in developing viable nursing inventions.
Level III
Involves quasi-experimental study whose purpose is to find out the connecting factor between dependent and independent variables. Evidence in this level is generated from well-designed controlled trials without randomization (Herron et al., 2019).
