Nurse practitioners are authorized to practice independently and to collaborate with other healthcare practitioners in providing primary care and acute treatment to patients. Regulations are also present in terms of delineating the scope of practice of nurse practitioners since there is a wide range of clinical activities that they are capable of doing. In this discussion, the nurse practitioner practice in Montana will be covered.
Nurse practitioners to practice in clinical/hospital settings are required to obtain their graduate degree including coursework that covers advanced assessment, continuity of care, disease prevention and wellness programs, proper diagnosis, interpretation of diagnostic test results, patient education and counseling, and collaboration with proper referral to other health care practitioners. In addition to these, nurse practitioners should also cover specific programs fit for their specialization (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016)
There are issues in healthcare that are considered as barriers in quality nurse practitioner practice and these are mostly differences between the educational background and preparation that the nurse practitioners and the physicians who are collaborating in hospitals and other healthcare facilities have. These differences lead to different approaches when it comes to patient treatment and care. Although there is also some good in this issue due to the various perspectives that are present when dealing with emergency cases, this is not ideal and may affect the quality of care that the patient receives (Muench, et al., 2019). Since nurse practitioners are also allowed to prescribe medications, this also becomes an issue with regards to patient safety and how the prescriptions are regulated to prevent substance abuse, especially on controlled substances. In addition to these barriers, a lack in the number of nurse practitioners is also present due to the high-stress level and educational requirement.
