Over the years people have had several opinions in regards to the consumption of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as foods. GMOs can be animals or bacteria, but most often they are crops like corn or potatoes that have been tweaked in a lab to increase the amount or quality of food they produce ( Kennedy, Samantha, 2020). Scientists have explored the world of crops and have managed to come up with a way of altering crop DNA to provide an improved product of the same. This is one of the greatest discoveries in the food sector and the production of GMO foods should be encouraged as a remedy to the overgrowing hunger starvation due to food shortage as a result of drought.
GMO crops are less vulnerable to many insects and pests. One of the major problems to farmers is the risk of crops attack by insects and pests. GMO crops are good news to farmers as they are less worried about pests and insects. These crops have been scientifically modified to self-protect from common pests and insects that lowers crop production. For example, Bt-corn is a GMO crop that has a gene added from Bacillus thuringiensis, a naturally occurring soil bacteria. This gene causes the corn to produce a protein that kills many pests and insects, helping to protect the corn from damage. ( Kennedy, Samantha, 2020). This ensures that there is a maximum production hence more food which can be used to feed the starving nations.
GMOs are more nutritious compared to traditional crops. Scientists have decided on a way of making GMO crops highly nutritious thus providing a guarantee for sufficient health benefits for human consumers. This is because scientists can modify the crops and enrich them with sufficient vitamins and minerals which are important for human food.
